LCD Backlighting For HDTV

LCD is winning the race to be the dominant display technology for HDTV. According to DisplaySearch, in 2007, the market for LCD (liquid crystal diode) TVs was estimated at $27.4 billion. LCD TV shipments rose a stronger than expected 52% year to year in the second quarter of 2008 to nearly 7.5 million units (79.8% of total HDTV sales).

The LCD screen on a LCD HDTV is a selective light filter. It does not in itself emit light, but selectively filters light passing through the display from the back. Most HDTVs include either a single sheet of luminescent plastic or sidelighting with fluorescent lamps to provide the backlight. Both techniques are difficult to control.

Many consumers focus on screen resolution when selecting a High Def (HDTV) system. Is this HDTV 720p, 1020i, or 1020p? However, when an expert group, the SMPTE (Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers), recently ranked the importance of screen resolution, it ranked fourth. The SMPTE ranked contrast ratio, color saturation, color temperature and grayscale ahead of screen resolution in importance. The Imaging Science Foundation reached a similar conclusion. Backlighting is the key component to improvement in contrast ratio and grayscale.

It is important that an LCD system allows for adjustment of the level of backlighting, and preferably, performs this function automatically. This will improve the contrast of the picture. Also, a reduced backlight level will also reduce power consumption and extend lamp life, as the power used and lamp lifetime is directly related to the backlight level. A lamp with a 50,000 hour lifetime at 6 milliamps may only have a 30,000 hour lifetime if the current is 7 milliamps, just 1 milliamp higher (Example: Sharp Electronics LCD Display).

Another important factor in the choice of backlighting is the consideration of "blur". Blur occurs when there is rapid motion in the programming, such as sports. When the picture changes quickly, the pixels can lag in response. Effective backlight engineering can reduce this significantly by strobing the backlighting, so that the individual pixels do not remain lit longer than needed. Examples of this technique include the Philips "Aptura" and the Samsung "LED Motion Plus".

Sidelighting

With sidelighting, the backlight is located in the back of the LCD panel, and to each side to create panel illumination. To make the light more uniform, a light diffuser is located between the lamps and the rear of the optical filter module. Most LCD systems that use sidelighting use cold cathode fluorescents (CCF) lamps. This technology provides a very bright white light. The lifetime of the lamps is usually between 10,000 to 20,000 hours (6-12 years at a rate of 5 hours of use per day).

The most important disadvantage is that the intensity of light cannot be varied locally, and sidelighting can look non-uniform. Some CCF lamps contain mercury. This is an ecological disadvantage.

Conventional Backlighting

Most backlighting is performed with a single sheet of electroluminescent plastic. These panels can age (though improvements in this area have reduced this problem). Electroluminescent Panel backlighting uses colored phosphors to generate light. Displays using this technique can be thin and lightweight, and provide even light distribution.

The major drawbacks:


Limited life of 3,000 to 5,000 hours to half brightness (2-3 years at a rate of 5 hours of use per day).
The intensity of light cannot be varied locally.

LED Backlighting

LED backlighting uses a matrix of LEDs that can be controlled individually to offer very good control. In this configuration, a large number of LEDs are mounted uniformly behind the display. Brightness improvements in LEDs have made them more practical for backlighting. NEC pioneered this technique with their monitor, the 2180WG. Other companies, such as Samsung, have recently introduced versions of this technology. This should push prices down (the Samsung model cost less than 1/3 the price of a comparable NEC monitor).

This system offers local dimming technology and can achieve 1,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. True actual black levels (the "Holy Grail" of LCD) are attainable by shutting off a pixel's light source. This can eliminate the grayish black picture typical of many LCD HDTVs. Groups of LEDs can be locally controlled to produce more light, increasing the brightness when necessary.

The problem with conventional white LEDs is that their spectrum is not ideal for photographic reproduction because they are basically blue LEDs with a yellow phosphor on top. Their color spectrum has two peaks, one at blue and another at yellow. White LEDs that are based on a group of red, green and blue LEDs are ideal for the RGB color filters of an LCD and can result in the most saturated colors. Sony's "Triluminos" LED backlight system is an example of this technique.
Sometimes, these HDTVs have a row of LEDs across the top and bottom of the display. This improves the brightness and color reproduction, and enables almost complete uniformity across the display.

LED backlights are much more efficient that alternative techniques. And since the LED backlight waste less energy, less heat is generated, that must be managed with air conditioning. LED backlights offer a long operating lifetime of more than 50,000 hours (more than 25 years of use at a rate of 5 hours a day).

LED backlit systems may not show well in a typical retail environment. Typically, the screens are somewhat reflective in order to achieve the high contrast ratio, and subsequently, a brightly lit showroom may not flatter this technology. In a more typical less-lit environment, this problem should not be as noticeable.

Engineering Concerns

The electrical engineering is simpler with LED backlights. Cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCF) require high AC voltages (1,500 VAC) at startup, and operating voltages of 700 VAC or more. When the lamp is new it may take much less voltage to start, but with age the voltage requirements usually increase, complicating a designer's problem. An electroluminescent panel requires a voltage of about 100 VAC @ 400 Hertz.

A power inverter (to generate VAC) is needed for both CCF and electroluminescent panels to operate with a DC power supply. This is a significant expense, in cost, size, and weight of the system. The best inverter for this application permits the output voltage to automatically increase as the lamps age, extending the useful life of the lamps.

LCD systems with LED backlighting utilize low voltage DC, usually 12 or 24 VDC. This results in a smaller, simpler, and more reliable system. LED backlit systems must be well cooled or their performance can suffer. The LEDs generate less heat than CCF lamps, but the heat is very concentrated. Operating at high temperatures reduces the LED lifetime and shifts their light spectrum, while reducing output luminance.

OLED

A new technology that you will be hearing about in the future is Organic LED (OLED). This technology has a completely different backlight technology, it doesn't need one. Because of this, they draw much less power. And because there is no backlight, an OLED system has a larger viewing angle than an LED system. An OLED display is much thinner than an LCD display. The response time for OLED is faster than normal LCD screens. An average of 8 to 12 milliseconds in response time is normal for a LCD compared to 0.01 milliseconds in response time for an OLED.

Sony introduced an 11" HDTV at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. The new 11" Sony TV is called the "XEL-1". It's very thin (1/10") and currently sells for $2500. Samsung demonstrated a 31" OLED HDTV with 1080P resolution at a tradeshow in Asia in November. LG, Toshiba, Matsushita (Panasonic), and others are investing hundreds of millions of dollars, developing this extremely promising technology. Toshiba has plans to sell a 30" OLED display in 2009. Samsung has announced they will sell large screen OLED HDTVs in 2010.

OLED displays have already been used for some time in digital cameras, cell phones and other devices with relatively small panels, because they are very energy efficient, which is very important in portable devices.

In theory, OLED displays can be more inexpensively manufactured than LCD or plasma displays, meaning that they should not be as expensive. Remember that the first large LCD and Plasma displays were much more expensive when they were first introduced.

Summary

LCD HDTVs and monitors with LED array backlighting are now the approach of choice because they exhibit better image quality while saving power. The ability to locally control light output is key to achieving high contrast ratios.

HDTV Review - The Samsung LN52B750

Another day, another HDTV, however, when the Samsung LN52B750 landed on our desk, we were in for something of a treat. And this from Samsung, remember, who consistently deliver quality tech and toys!

As is to be expected, the styling of the case itself is good. Not the most exciting, but certainly smart and attractive enough with a modern charcoal grey flecked bezel - to maintain interest when powered down in the sitting room... If it ever is!

Once powered up however, the Samsung LN52B750 really packs a punch. From the full HD resolution, right through the superb anti blur controls, and onto amazing processing speeds for those quick moving sports and action scenes.

But again, from the likes of Samsung, such a strong showing is to be expected. But where the Samsung LN52B750 really demonstrates itself is in the toys it provides. Picture-in-picture is a welcome addition, but the Anynet+ tech, which allows for all TV peripherals to be controlled with just a single remote, is simplicity and practicality itself. It is not the leading initiative in the TV though.

No, this mantle belongs to the Internet TV service, which allows all your favorite websites to be enjoyed from your sitting room, feet up and knocking back a swift one. This nifty application is under threat however. The Samsung LN52B750 also allows for complete synchronization with all your other toys and gadgets around the house. Whether you wish to view pictures on your phone, listen to tracks on your MP3, or update that spreadsheet on your laptop, it can now all be done with just your remote through the TV.

That all this is delivered on one of the world's most advanced LCD screens too, makes living with the Samsung LN52B750 something of a pleasure. We're not telling you to rush out and buy one, thought we won't be surprised when you do.

When is HDTV Not HDTV?

Despite the fact that HDTV has been around for a few years and that there are numerous books, magazines and websites dedicated to it, it can still be pretty confusing, particularly if you're not a technology geek. So, it's worth recapping just what constitutes HDTV.

In order to receive and watch an HDTV signal you need a number of things. Firstly, you need to be in a country and area where HDTV is broadcast, either over the air, by cable and by satellite. If you live in the US, you can almost certainly receive HDTV by one, if not all of these media. In Europe, you will be more limited. For example, in the UK you need to either sign-up to Telewest (cable) or Sky (satellite) to get HDTV (although you could invest in a Freesat box and receive satellite HDTV without a subscription).

Secondly you need a tuner that can receive HDTV. This will typically either be a cable, satellite, or off-air set-top box, but could also be an integrated HDTV, CableCard or Mac/PC HDTV tuner (usually either a PCI card or USB 2 peripheral).

Thirdly, you need a display which is capable of reproducing HDTV signals. To do this, it must have a vertical resolution of at least 720 pixels, be able to display progressive scan signals, and have a minimum width to height aspect ratio of 16:9. EDTVs have a vertical resolution of only 480 lines and so can't display HDTV signals at HDTV quality.

Finally, you need to be able to hook the three elements together. The key part here is that the TV must be connected to the tuner, if it's not built-in, by a medium capable of transferring high definition signals. For a TV or projector this means DVI, HDMI, or component connections -- although if you choose component, you may run into trouble later on when watching signals encoded using particular HDCP. For a computer tuner, a PCI slot, USB 2 or FireWire interface will do the job.

Samsung PN42B450 42-inch Plasma HDTV: Samsung, which is famous for its LCD HDTVs, is now trying to grab a big piece the plasma TV market (currently dominated by Panasonic) with its launch of its new line of plasma HDTVs. This model is a 720p HDTV with a blazing 0.001ms response time. It also uses anti-glare technology to minimize the reflection of background lights to produce crisp images and dark black levels. Most importantly, the Samsung PN42B450 is doing so well in the market due to is extremely competitive pricing. Currently, this model retails for just around $636 each. That's an amazing price for a 42-inch Plasma TV.

Panasonic VIERA TC-P42S1 42-inch Plasma HDTV: This model is a full HD, 1080p HDTV. After dominating the plasma market for so long with its G10 series, Panasonic has decided to try to conquer to price sensitive market with the launch of a cheaper line of plasma TV.
The Panasonic VIERA TC-P42S1 currently retails for just around $829, a great bargain for a 1080p plasma HDTV. The video playback on this model was very good, looking great from a wide array of angles.

LG 42PQ30 42-inch Plasma HDTV:LG is considered to be the underdog in the LCD and plasma HDTV market. Despite that, LG has come up with a series of impressive HDTV models in recent years. The LG 42PQ30 is a 720p plasma TV. Its 42-inch screen has a 1365 x 768 resolution and it rests on a swivel stand. Although the image quality doesn't really match up to that of Panasonic models, it is still a very competent HDTV. It currently retails for around $629 each.

How to Identify the Best Television

Ever asked yourself which is the best TV in the market? Have you got it yet or you have got to keep on searching? How will you know which the best is and which criteria are you going to use? I ask myself the same too. With plasma and LCD TVs coming out left, right and center, capable of HDTV, it's dizzying trying to keep up with the advances. Every company claims that they have the best TV.

I have been on lookout trying to find the best TV, and here's what I think so far; Plasma technology is in my opinion the most advanced technology on the market as of today, however am not sure they are the best TVs. First of all, they are riddled with all sorts of technological issues from what I've been able to conclude. Of course the manufacturer doesn't really want you to know that, but from reading materials and other sources of information, they have a life expectancy of maybe 5 years utmost. Plasma tvs are probably the best when it comes to picture quality, but this has to be weighed against their still enthusiastic price tag, and low life span. Though they maybe not the best TVs, but they have the best combination of comfort and affordability.

In the near future though, LCD technology is going to be a sort of standard for both televisions and monitors, which may lead to the conclusion that most TVs will in fact be made using LCD technology. In comparison to the good old CRT TV which works great, are tried and tested, and always very affordable, though with not the best image quality; the money saved can be used to acquire a much bigger TV. After all is said and done, the best television is the one that meets your needs better than any other.

LCD TVs and Plasma TVs - Separating Fact From Fiction

Overall Picture Quality: The plasmas and the newest models of the TFT-LCD flat screens have the capacity to deliver high quality viewing offering crisp, clear and bright pictures. The plasma though is the one recommended for home theater usage. The cells in the plasma TVs are fixed in such a way as to prevent any light from leaking. This is an important feature because it makes the blacks deeper, which help the plasma transmit the light and dark pictures typical in movies and TV shows in good quality.

To compare, LCD technology involves the use of backlighting going through to the LCD, this makes it difficult for achieving blacks that are true in nature, and the light leaks from between pixels.

This is not to tell you that these LCD flat screens don't make good TVs for you; the ones that are sold today haver better contrast and area able to produce deeper blacks than they use to, but plasmas still does this better.

Angle for Viewing: This is not really as big of an issue, with the newer models of LCDs compared to the plasmas. But continue to read for more information...

Don't make the assumption that there is no issue when it comes to the angle of viewing when comparing LCD to plasma screen. On average, especially with the inexpensive LCD screens,  when viewing off axis the picture quality does fade more noticeably compared to plasma screens.

The Burn-in and the Image Retention: In these areas the LCDs take the lead. They not only don't have the inclination to get burn-in but with the image sticking or image retention it can be reversed in these.

Realize though that while the plasmas can suffer burn-in and image sticking can happen in LCDs, and that both conditions can then cause image retention, that these are two different drawbacks.

Burn-in is not as prevalent with the newer plasma screens like it was in the older models, this is based on fairly regular viewing habits. With the LCD screens today the image sticking is not as likely to happen when regular viewing habits are enacted.

Viewing Distance: Take the same size of both the plasma and LCD and the LCD has the smoothest picture of the two, as long as it is the same pixel count.

This requires that you be viewing within the distance that is recommended, which means for HDTV that is double what the width of the screen is, and if this winds up being shy of 9 feet, than you will get better viewing with the LCD for your TV.

Usage of Power: In the power category the LCD wins by far mainly because it uses a much lower amount of electricity. Approximately 30% less electricity used in fact with the LCD opposed to what the plasma of a similar size uses.

Lifetime: The two technologies are about the same on this anymore. The plasma and LCD TVs both have been proven to have a half life of sixty thousand hours. If you just figure half this time of thirty thousand hours the TVs would last about 14 years when watching them for about 6 hours a day. The people in  the USA replace TVs about every seven years!

The LCD and plasma TVs are based on a durable and dependable display technology today. So the lifetime seems to be more about the quality the LCD or plasma is manufactured at, more than the technology itself.

Samsung LCD HD - A One-Horse Race

There is always a debate on LCD vs. LED HDTV. The battle has raged behind the scenes since someone figured out how to make a digital wrist watch into a big, honkin' TV. The new Samsung LCD flat panel series ignored this debate and incorporated both sides into its new line up and thumbs its nose at the rest of the industry.

The Series 7 uses a "polarizer" that reflects room light to produce darker black tones. This in turn makes colors look more vibrant. In other words, your colors are huge and pop on the screen while your darks are as black as a banker's heart, and in the same frame. The new Samsung LCD HD series has come very close to flat panel Holy Grail: absolute black. In addition to all of this, the polarizing technology allows the new Samsung LCD flat panel to adjust the color and darkness ratio to accommodate light changes in the room-as they happen. This is definitely not your Dad's rear projection TV.

As far as performance goes though, the most impressive thing the Samsung LCD HD has been able to do is increase motion speed. It is annoying in an action movie when the characters move in slow motion or the screen will "shift" like a John Woo movie. It's even more annoying because John Woo didn't direct it. Samsung has nearly eliminated motion blur by upping the processing time to 4ms-that's milliseconds. So let's skip the math and just say it's four times faster than most of the competition. That's important on any day ending in "Y."

Samsung LCD HD TVs upped the ante on performance and that's to be expected in a competitive market, what else they did wasn't unexpected-but like your favorite team winning the Super Bowl, it is still exciting.

Some Samsung LCD flat panels come equipped with the new Samsung Internet enabled networking suite of features. They can be used for both wired and wireless connectivity to the internet or your home PC. Samsung has incorporated USB ports to play music, movies, and more from portable devices. You can also connect to Samsung's own RSS for streaming live news, scores, and other things you want to keep track of. However, it won't tell you where your 16-year old is.

As if that all wasn't enough, Samsung LCD flat panels went to the beauty parlor as well. Samsung expanded on its already visually pleasing Touch of Color design and added a new color this year: ruby. The reviews on the new color design of the "frame" have been described as "stylish, elegant" and "cutting edge." So now you can almost judge that book by its cover.

LCD Vs Plasma Vs DLP - Which HDTV is Best For You?

With so many new innovations in televisions today, it's hard to keep up with all of the popular technologies. Each of these technologies have advantages and disadvantages. It can be confusing as to what these technologies mean and if you really want or need what they have to offer. There are many people who have a wonderful understanding of all of this, but to the vast majority of us this is almost like mastering a new language. Many of us remember how easy it once was to buy a television. In the past, all you needed to consider was the size of the screen and if you could afford it. Technology has its advantages because the picture and sound quality have advanced dramatically in recent years and continues to advance, along with the addition of numerous new features. This article is the result of quite a bit of research. In this article, I have attempted to put in the most basic terms what these technologies are and how they differ from each other. It is my hope that with this information you will be able to make a better decision about which TV is best for you.

LCD, Plasma and DLP are the most popular technologies behind displaying pictures on HDTV today. Every shopper buying a TV today needs to know what these terms mean in order to make an intelligent decision about the best TV to buy.

What is LCD? LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. There is alot of technical jargon out there that explains the science behind this in very exacting and complicated terms. For the purposes of buying a TV, all you need to know is that LCD is a television display type that uses a viscous liquid and a mesh of transistors to turn pixels on and off. Direct-view and projection television both use this technology and in both, the LCDs require a light to generate brightness.

What are the advantages of LCD TVs?

(1) Low energy consumption. LCD TVs use very low amounts of power.
(2) Cooler running temperature. The light source (florescent bulb) in an LCD television generates less heat than a Plasma or traditional television.
(3) Low amounts of glare.
(4) Quality LCDs have excellent brightness level pictures and offer more contrast. Compared to Plasma TVs, LCD TVs have an increased image brightness.
(5) LCD flat panels can be mounted on walls and don't take up much room. They are typically slightly lighter than Plasma TVs.
(6) Fairly long display life. The display life of quality LCDs is approximately 60,000 hours, after which you may only have to replace the light source.

What are the disadvantages of LCD TVs?

(1) LCDs are not good for fast moving images because when objects move quickly across the screen, the image "delays" and has a tail following it on the screen when it shouldn't. There are two ways to avoid this issue. By purchasing LCDs that are 37" or smaller you will have a better image quality since the delay is less noticeable than on the larger LCD TVs. Another way is to buy a 120hz LCD, but those models are higher in price than the 60hz models.
(2) LCD reviews indicate that brightness levels aren't as good as Plasma. Although black levels have improved, they also are still not quite up to the level of Plasma.
(3) The viewing angle of an LCD is not as good as a Plasma. If you are watching an LCD from a slanted view, the quality of the image can diminish. However, this difference between LCD and Plasma is not that significant.
(4) LCD TVs over 35" are very expensive.

What is Plasma? Sometimes all flat-panel HDTVs are referred to as Plasma screens. This is a misnomer. Plasma screens have more in common with Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) TVs than with LCDs. The plasma gas strikes specific pixels at the front of the TV and the pixel then turns to a specific color. Backlights are not needed with Plasma screens because the plasma varies the intensity of light which then produces a full range of colors which typically have an advantage over LCDs because they have deeper blacks.

What are the advantages of Plasma TVs?

(1) Great life span. Typically, at an average use of six hours per day, they will last about 20 years.
(2) Better viewing angles. Unlike LCDs, a Plasma screen has about 180 degrees field of vision without loss of picture quality, so you can watch from any angle.
(3) Excellent contrast ratios which enable the Plasma TVs to show better shadow detail.
(4) Faster picture response. Plasma TVs have an excellent picture response. There is virtually no delay like LCDs.
(5) Like LCDs, Plasma TVs don't take up too much space and can be mounted on a wall.

What are the disadvantages of Plasma TVs?

(1) Image burn-in. Plasma TVs are more susceptible to image burn-in of static images. If you were to leave the Plasma TV on for many hours, the network logo on the bottom right-hand corner of the screen would be burnt-in.
(2) Plasma TVs are not available under 37".
(3) Shorter display lifespan than other types of TVs like LCDs. Simply by turning the brightness down, you can extend the display lifespan of the Plasma TV.
(4) Plasma TVs generate more heat than LCDs.

What is DLP? DLP stands for Digital Light Processing. DLP is a method using rear projection light which has taken the place of the old Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) technology. Unlike CRT, DLPs are relatively thin. Like LCD, a chip is used for the actual image to be displayed on, however, the chip used in a DLP TV is different. The chip is referred to as a DMD (Digital Micromirror Device). If you're not confused already, to simplify this, every pixel on a DMD chip is a reflective mirror.

What are the advantages of DLP TVs?

(1) DLP TVs are cheaper than LCDs or Plasma TVs.
(2) DLP TVs have a good variety of sets in very large sizes.
(3) Excellent brightness and color.

What are the disadvantages of DLP TVs?

(1) High maintenance cost. With DLP TVs you have to replace the projection bulb which has a limited durability. Not only can these be expensive, but they can also be hard to find.
(2) Not wall mountable. DLP TVs take up more space than LCD TVs and Plasma TVs.
(3) Poor field of vision. As with LCDs, when viewed on an angle the picture quality suffers.
(4) Poor picture quality. The picture quality does not compare to LCD TVs and Plasma TVs.
(5) Image blur. With DLP TVs scenes of fast action can cause a trail of colors.

Ultimately, what TV you decide to buy depends upon what your needs are and your personal situation. Only you can decide what is best for you and your household, but it is always best to be informed regarding what your options are.

There May Not Be a Single 'Best LED TV'

As television technology continues to advance, and even lower priced sets offer beautiful, impressive images, there may not be just one 'best LED TV' for everyone. It wasn't long ago, that to get a high-end HDTV, you would have to purchase a plasma set, some of which that were several times more expensive than even one of the best LED TV sets now being offered. Also, with Texas Instruments' impressive DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology, coupled with an LED lit screen, you might think you're looking at one of the best LED TV sets when viewing a relatively inexpensive rear projection LED TV. If the price is a big factor in your next HDTV, take a look at some of the incredible rear projection Samsung LED DLP HDTV models, they are not your Mom and Dad's rear projection sets.

LED technology is being used in both projection and LCD televisions, and the benefits are numerous. One advantage in using LED's, regardless of the application, is the longevity factor. LED's last a long time, a very long time. Unlike plasma sets, that were known to have a somewhat limited life span on the plasma display itself (at least before degrading), the LED lighting on LED-lit sets will probably never be the reason for replacing the television. When considering a projection set, there will never be any lamps that need to be replaced either. The fluorescent lamp replacement costs on previous versions of projection televisions could be up to several hundred dollars too.

While considering LED DLP sets, since there is no rotating color wheel in the new implementation of the LED DLP technology, not only is there no whirring sound that was noticeable in some older sets, the artifact known as the rainbow effect (that was caused by the color wheel) is no longer a factor. Also, LEDs are solid-state devices that draw very little current. Compared to other lighting methods used in televisions, some of the newer LED HDTV models use up to 40% less power. Obviously, that's a major savings in operating cost, especially when you may be powering a huge display.

One of the other things to consider is the brightness of the images produced. Some of the Samsung LED TV models boast up to a 40% increase in the brightness, again, this isn't just a minor difference that might not even be noticed in actual viewing. These are very 'cutting edge' televisions.

So, we all want the best in whatever we're spending our money on, and that includes a new LED HDTV, but to suggest a single 'best LED TV' according to specifications, may become a recommendation of just looking at the higher end Samsung LED TV models, as well as other brands. The Sharp Aquos also comes to mind, as well as Sony's Bravia, but the truth is, even a lower-priced Samsung LED DLP HDTV (and other brands) may please most people, and at a much more attractive price than some of the more expensive LED-lit LCD displays. The 'best LED TV' for you, may very well not be the best LED TV for other people. Why spend hundreds, or even thousands more, if the advantages are not even really noticeable? Of course if you are just after more features, that's another story.

When some of the imaging advantages of one LED TV over another are only noticeable in the product manual specifications, is it really something that you need to pay extra for? One more time...the best LED TV for you, might not be the best LED TV for everyone.

What's the Best Type of HDTV - LCD, Plasma Or DLP?

Buying a high definition television is no small investment. It's not just the price you're worried about. You also want the best possible set on your budget.

There's really no such thing as 'the best type of HDTV'. It all depends on what you're looking for and the kind of money you want to spend.

Generally, plasma HDTVs are known for their picture quality. If you want the best picture quality for the cheapest price, go for plasma. If however screen size is more important to you, you can get HUGE DLP sets for a fraction of the price of a plasma or LCD of the same price.

And what's LCD good for? Well although an LCD of plasma-like quality and big size is generally more expensive than the others, LCDs are much thinner and lighter, and the pricier ones are of a standard that plasma and DLP just don't compare to.

DLP

DLP is great if you're looking for a bargain on a huge screen. You can get a 73 inch 1080p HDTV for just $2500. Remember though, if you're looking to go over 50 inches, make sure you look for DLP rear-projection. The blacks on these are pretty impressive, so you don't have to suffer with rubbish contrast. It's also worth looking out for the LED-backlit models, which are instant-on, have great colour quality and last much longer than the old light bulb based models.

What are the disadvantages? Well although DLPs are pretty light, they're usually quite chunky and don't work very well with wall mounts. The biggest problem however is the viewing angle. If you'll be watching TV in a small room from all angles, it's best to avoid DLP, as it isn't able to keep its picture quality from extreme angles.

Plasma

Apart from the most ridiculously expensive LCDs, plasma beats all in blur-free motion, contrast and blacks. If you've read about these in the past you might be worried about short life-spans and burn-in. These are no longer issues with the newer sets, which have much longer half-lives and anti burn-in technology.

Disadvantages: Plasma uses double the power of LCDs, so if your electricity bill's already keeping you up at night, you may want to think twice about going plasma. Plasma is also generally more expensive than an LCD of the same size (don't forget you get great picture quality as a result). They're a touch heavier than LCD but not enough to break your wall mount.

LCD

LCD is your default choice for a HDTV if you're looking to go 42" or less. The smaller screens are cheaper than plasma and they tend to be thinner and lighter than the others. You can dial down the back light on an LCD, so they can easily be greened - great for watching a late night movie. Although the picture quality generally isn't as good as plasma, the new much more expensive LED-backlit models come very close.

So you're thinking of buying a 55 inch LCD TV? You have many choices, as many companies make them. If you want a lot for your money, you should consider the Vizio VF551XVT.

Vizio VF551XVT's most impressive feature is its price, $1,999 most places. It is impressive because this LCD TV features LED backlighting with local dimming. The backlight behind the panel is composed of some 2,000 white LED lights (conventional LCD TVs use fluorescent lights). The LED lights are combined into groups that can dim or brighten independently of one another, according to the needs of the image displayed. The result: you get deep blacks, which is an important element of great picture quality.

Again, Vizio VF551XVT will cost you a mere $1,999. If you put them side by side, you'll notice that Vizio's TV produces a lesser quality image. However, it you see this Vizio TV set by itself, you're going to think it's got a great image.

So, if you'd rather get a lot of HDTV for your money, Vizio's the way to go.

HDTV - LCD Versus DLP Versus Plasma

Have you ever wondered what LCD, Plasma and DLP means? Which one is better? Which one is cheaper? Is it right for me? We all have encountered this while looking for a great HDTV. Technology is always upgrading itself. So many of us go to the store and see what is the best to buy. You start looking at the new HDTV but you have no idea what all this 1080p, 124Hz DLP means. Finally you find a sales clerk. He starts explaining to you what the differences are but in the end they all still sound the same. Then you decided to look on-line and found this guide.

So what are LCD, Plasma and DLP? LCD are Liquid Crystal Display. In simple terms, they're "sandwiches" made up of liquid crystal pushed between 2 glass plates. The images are created by varying the amount of electrical charges applied on each crystal. Plasma on the other hand, is a matrix of tiny plasma cells charged with electrons to produce a image. DLP are Digital Light Processing screens.

So what are some of the advantages that each one has? DLP are larger and cheaper then LCD or Plasma. DLP provides good brightness and great color accuracy. However DLP has a weakness, it has a limited viewing range, while LCD and Plasma has consistent viewing angles without losing any quality.

Plasma and LCD are both masterpieces. Plasma is great for Night time while LCD is great for daytime. They both have about 60,000 hours of lifespan. But in terms of resolution LCD is the best. Plasma also got a "burn in" problem. This can also happen for LCD but many experts say it will happen more likely on plasma then LCD.

What to Know When Looking For a New HDTV

Choosing a HDTV with a high refresh rate is what you are going to want to put your efforts into because this is something you can see, even a casual customer can. The refresh rate is how often per second a new image is presented and if that number is low you can actually tell that it looks a bit clunky. So even the casual consumer will want to find a HDTV with the highest refresh rate possible.

Unless you are seriously into home entertainment technology, you will probably find that there isn't that much more that you really need to know on the technical side. Instead, focus of finding a well recommended HDTV with a high refresh rate and features that you will actually use, such as the ability to download streaming content from internet services like Netflix and Pandora.
